The Tempest
by William Shakespeare
In Year 6 we have been studying The Tempest by William Shakespeare.
We have been to The Derby Assembly Rooms to see a production of the Tempest performed by Shakespeare 4 Kidz.We have also watched an animated version of the story and produced our own character studies.

As part of our Design & Technology Lessons we have also been making cars for our Crash Vehicles Project.

The crash!
CRASH VEHICLES
The Crash Vehicle Project takes places over a few months. The children build three cars altogether from a cardboard template.
Each vehicle is then crashed under the same set of conditions and the damage is assessed. The children then discuss how they can strenghten their vehicles and build and crash a second car. The damage is again assessed and a final vehicle is built with further strengthening added. This time it is crashed under the same conditions again, but with the addition of an egg! Most of the eggs survive!

YEAR 6 HISTORY
As part of their studies Year 6 lookes at the develoment of transport through the ages in Burton-on-Trent. They researched an incident in which a tram crashed at the bottom of Bearwood Hill Road in Winshill in 1919.

TRAM CRASH TWOSOME DEAD

Of the 29 tram passengers that day, just two had their very lives stripped of them at 11:30am on the 8th October 1919.
The disaster unfolded when the Burton to Ashby tram could not take a sharp turn when running backwards.
Conductress Lilian Parker and another woman passenger died and a further 16 were treated in hospital.
The tram was running up a hill, then stopped and started rolling backwards 200 yards down it.
It could not negotiate the turn backwards and just overturned.
Some passengers jumped from the open top before the crash and survived, one woman died instantly and at least 20 were injured. Miss Parker had a leg amputated but unfortunately died of her injuries.
The Ferry Bridge
The Ferry Bridge was also very important to the changes in Burton's transport infrastructure, here are two paintings by children from 6G.
